Where Winds Meet: Character Progression

Once you create your character in Where Winds Meet, you'll have to stick with it for the entire game in that specific playthrough. Here are the steps to make your character as strong and capable as possible throughout.

Given that Where Winds Meet is an RPG game above all else, the character development is something you'll pay a lot of attention to throughout your time spent in this MMO action RPG from NetEase Games.

As in all other RPG games, your character will be mainly developed through levelling up, but apart from that, there will be many more ways to make your character stronger and more capable of withstanding all the dangers of Jianghu.

If you're interested in how to make your character as powerful as possible and want to know everything about the character development in Where Winds Meet, then this guide is for you.

What is the best way to earn XP points?

Levelling the character in Where Winds Meet follows the classic XP structure you've seen in so many RPGs and games in general. To make your character stronger, you'll have to partake in quests and other activities to accumulate XP points, and once you gain enough, you'll gain one level up.

Literally everything you do in Where Winds Meet will reward you with a bit of XP points. However, some actions and activities give you more XP than others. The best XP givers are quests, main and side alike.

To check out how much XP a single quest holds as a reward, go inside the pop-up menu or the side panel and choose 'Quest'. Here, you can choose between the main story quests, Lost Chapter, encounters, and exploration, and each of those categories will show you available quests to partake in. If you need the XP to level up, go ahead and solve as many of those quests as you want.

Apart from solving quests, everything else from gathering collectibles to gathering materials, cooking, playing minigames, and literally everything else will give you some amount of XP.

How to level up

Once inside the game, you'll notice a green bar on the bottom of your screen, shown directly below your ID number. This bar indicates your current level of progress, meaning once it is filled up, you'll gain one level. However, to check out your current level, you'll need to press the start/Esc button and enter the side panel. On the top of the side panel, you'll see your character's name, ID number, and avatar, and below the avatar, you'll see your current level as well as the level progression bar.

Levelling in Where Winds Meet doesn't provide you with some special points or perks; there are talent points, but they are not tied to levelling; the game rewards those randomly after finishing some in-game activities (you can learn more about talents on this link).

Every level means that your character is stronger and his/her stats are improved, and that's pretty much it when it comes to levelling in Where Winds Meet.

Level breakthroughs

Every time you gain a new level, you'll get notified by the game; however, once you reach level 10, your character's levelling will stop until you earn a breakthrough. The game will notify you about this, but if, for any reason, you've missed it or simply skipped it for the sake of gameplay or the story, here is how this mechanic works.

Every ten levels, the game will require a breakthrough to keep levelling your character. Those breakthroughs can be achieved by entering the side panel and navigating to the Solo Mode option set exactly below the level progression bar.

Once you open this menu, go to the Solo Mode and click the Breakthrough option in the bottom right corner of the screen. The first couple of level breakthroughs will require you to fight three waves of enemies each, resulting in a boss fight as the final wave. Once you defeat those enemies, you'll gain the right to break through the level and gain ten more new levels.

After level 30, you'll be sent to Trials. The trials are pretty much the same as earlier fights; only, to break through, you'll have to finish two trials containing three waves of enemies and, of course, the boss fight at the end of the second trial.

You should keep in mind that once you reach the level limit and the breakthrough is required to continue levelling, this should become your priority, even if you're in the middle of a quest. Every XP you gain while your levelling is suspended due to a breakthrough will be wasted and won't be gained retroactively after you break through the level.

Other ways of improving your character

Apart from levelling up, you'll have to take care of your character's development as well. The weapons you're using have separate levels too and will require upgrading along with levelling your character. To take care of this, enter the side panel or pop-up menu and choose 'Develop'.

Here, you'll see three different ways of developing your character: abilities, gear, and talents.

Abilities

Under abilities, you'll be able to take care of three categories:

  • Weapon Martial Arts
  • Inner Way
  • Mystic Skills

Depending on the weapons you're using (up to two can be chosen at the given time), you'll have up to three different martial arts dedicated to a specific weapon. The martial arts are unlocked through talents and are different for each weapon.

Inside this menu, you can upgrade your martial arts by either pressing the square button (PlayStation controller) once one of the weapons is highlighted and doing the quick upgrade, or you can enter the specific weapon and upgrade the martial arts manually. Martial arts level is directly tied to your character's level and cannot go above it, meaning, for example, if your character level is 20, the martial arts level can be 20 as well, even though you have the upgrade materials.

Speaking of upgrade materials, you'll mostly need coins for upgrading (rewarded for doing almost anything in the game), while the later levels will require some special items gained by killing specific enemies or bought from vendors. In any case, the game will provide you with the information on how to get in possession of those items.

Gear

The gear tab takes care of the weapon enhancement itself, and here, you'll be able to upgrade the weapons you're wielding, but in a bit of a different way, which we intend to explain here. In this game, the weapons cannot be upgraded in the classic manner, which means no usual upgrading of the weapon you like or the one you prefer.

To upgrade a specific weapon or a piece of gear in general, you'll have to choose the better gear of the same kind you gain as rewards and replace them. You can upgrade your gear, though, only not a specific piece, but rather gear placement in general (left arm weapon, right arm weapon, headgear, chest and leg armour, etc.).

You can tune specific weapons, though, giving them some extra stat improvements, and this option is gained once you reach level 40 in the game.
