Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is an action-adventure game developed and published by Capcom, coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2026. It is the first mainline entry in the Onimusha series in nearly two decades, following Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006, and forms part of Capcom's push to revive dormant franchises. The game was announced at The Game Awards in December 2024 and received a playable demo at Gamescom 2025. Development began in 2020 when Capcom assembled a dedicated team, using the studio's proprietary RE Engine.
Set in Kyoto during the early Edo period, the game follows a fictionalised version of legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi as he battles the Genma, demonic creatures from the underworld that have overrun the city under a creeping supernatural force known as Malice. Armed with his katana and the mystical Oni Gauntlet, Musashi can absorb souls from defeated enemies, using them to restore health, purchase upgrades, and unleash powerful Oni Armaments. The game features the series' signature Issen counterattack mechanics alongside a largely linear structure punctuated by open areas and side quests. Capcom has been clear that Way of the Sword is not designed to be punishingly difficult, keeping the focus on its action-horror roots rather than soulslike tropes.
