Animals play a big role in Where Winds Meet's huge open world. Which ones of them are there just to fill up the space and which ones can be used by the hero? You can find out in our guide.

All RPG titles let the players participate in many different activities, and Where Winds Meet isn't an exception. Those activities vary from doing main and side missions to exploring the world, and sometimes, in video games, people like to do usual things, like, for example, petting animals.

Since this open-world MMO action RPG from NetEase Games is a game full of animals, you probably wonder if it is possible to own some of them as pets or about interactions with the animals in general.

Luckily, we can offer you some answers about this topic, and if you want to find out everything related to animals in this game, read about it in our guide.

All types of animals in Where Winds Meet

There are basically only three types of animals in Where Winds Meet:

  • Friendly (cats, dogs, horses, chickens, geese...)
  • Wild animals that will attack you on sight (wolves, bears, hogs)
  • Neutral animals (deer, birds, fish, insects)

All those animals can be interacted with in one way or another. Wild animals will attack on sight, so be prepared to fight anytime you cross them out there in the world. Other animals are there to help you, and in this guide, we will show you how to interact with each one of them.

Cats

Cats play a huge role in Where Winds Meet; one entire in-game mechanic revolves around the cat called Meow Meow. Meow Meow is a mysterious cat that will give you small puzzle and parkour challenges, and as rewards, you'll get access to her shop to buy special items.

The world is full of other cats too, and petting them will give you the Elegance points, which will increase your affection with cats. The bigger affection means a bigger level, which will eventually lead to obtaining some attributes in the game. In any case, petting cats is highly advisable and will benefit your gameplay.

Dogs

Dogs cannot be petted, but one trophy is related to one very strange activity involving dogs. Inside Blissful Retreat, you'll meet a group of dogs, and if you interact with them, you'll be able to turn into one of those dogs, which will allow you to move within a dedicated circle and behave like a dog.

In this state, you'll be able to sit on a nearby table and play mahjong with other dogs (nice touch, really). If you try to leave a circle, you'll return to a normal form. The other dogs are there to fill up the space, and apart from some quest involving dogs, you won't be able to interact with them.

Other domestic animals (chickens, geese)

Settlements are full of these, especially geese. In fact, one entire quest is tied to a goose which will give you the only pet known to us (more on that later), while one demon goose is probably the strongest opponent in the entire game (it would be hilarious if it isn't that dangerous).

Wolves, bears, and hogs

Those wild animals will attack you as soon as you get too close to them. Wolves are not that dangerous when they attack alone, but in packs, they can be a threat. Almost all bears are tied to a special mechanic involving the Tai Chi mystic art. Once you see a bear, use the opportunity to throw him on the pile of rocks, and every time, a chest will be hidden behind.

If you fail to do it and kill the bear before throwing him on the rocks, that chest might remain lost to you. Sometimes bears will respawn, and sometimes they won't.

Hogs, much like the wolves, usually attack in packs, and they charge a lot, but they are probably the least dangerous type of wildlife out there.

Horses

Horses are used as mounts in Where Winds Meet, and for them, we have a special guide, so check it out if you want. Apart from this function, some horses (donkeys as well) will be involved in boss battles, and in this form they are quite dangerous.

Horses can be stolen, tamed, and even bought from merchants, and they play an important role in the gameplay loop of this game.

Deer

Deer can be found roaming all over both regions of the game. Those animals are skittish and will run away as soon as you approach them. I'm not so well informed about the Chinese customs, but I believe they are not holy animals in China like they are in Japan, so you can safely target them and kill them.

Once looted, deer will provide some meat, which will be used in making meals.

Fish and birds

You can catch fish using two methods in Where Winds Meet, and fish are divided into different categories and sizes too. You can participate in fishing mini games where you'll compete with fishermen, and each fish you catch will be added to your bag and will be used later in cooking.

If a commercial fishing method is too boring for you, you'll be able to stand inside a shallow water body (rivers, ponds, lakes) and use the Tai Chi skill to catch more fish without too much trouble.

Birds can also be hunted with your bow, and it is actually the first activity you'll come across as soon as you get the bow for the first time in the game. Later in the game, you can hunt down the birds and loot their corpses for meat.

Insects

There are lots of insect species in Where Winds Meet, and they are all useful as well. You'll come across a lot of butterflies, and they will all lead you to certain rewards.

Mantises and crickets are tied to oddities, while the bees will protect their hives, but you'll be able to get rid of them using fire arrows, and those beehives will also reward you with one type of oddity. Check out our guide to find out everything about oddities.

Pets in Where Winds Meet

As far as we are informed, there is only one pet inside the game, and it is tied to a side quest involving a sick goose. This goose is located just before you arrive in Blissful Retreat. If you manage to heal this goose, it will give you a sturdy goose egg, which you'll be able to hatch.

Once you do, you'll get a pet that will follow you around, but unfortunately for a very short period of time. We didn't run across any other pets inside the game, and if we do, we will update this guide.
