Modifying weapons in Jagged Alliance 3 is extremely simple unless you are expecting that you have to loot entire mods in order to slap them on a gun.
Haemimont Games didn't make it obvious but their system is much more elegant than that because the only thing you actually need for mods are Parts.
Optionally, you can use Steel Pipes, Chip, or Lens for more advanced modification.
How to modify a weapon in JA3
To start the modification process, open the inventory (default I), find the weapon you wish to alter and right-click it. Select "Modify" to enter the modification UI.
You can now click on one of the squares below the weapon to see which mods can be installed in that spot. Hovering over the desired mod shows you what it does, the necessary materials and the difficulty of crafting it.
There are only four material types you will need in total - Parts, Steel Pipes, Chip and Lens. Parts are used for all modifications, Steel Pipes are for most barrel mods, Chips are for almost all mods on the side of the barrel and reflex sights while lens are used for telescopic sights.
The harder the mod is to install, the higher Mechanical level of your merc needs to be, otherwise you will fail to apply the mod and the weapon might lose some durability. Therefore, it is always good to have someone with at least 80 Mechanical in the party. Mercs like Steroid also qualify because he will gain points over the course of the game as you use him to hack various objects.
Perhaps the most important thing for successfully modding a weapon is to save scum. You can save in the inventory screen, enter the mod UI, attempt to mod and if it fails, just quick load and try again.
