Looks like even $700 million isn't enough, Star Citizen still doesn't have a release date. Roberts Space Industries' Star Citizen has raised over $700 million so far, according to developer Cloud Imperium Games.
The development team behind the controversial space simulation has made the revenue publicly available on its website. Cloud Imperium Games calls this money collected funds.
Cloud Imperium Games even breaks down income by the last months, weeks and hours. At its lowest point on the morning of May 28th, Star Citizen brought in $42,886 in one hour, followed by around $1.5 million on May 27th, $10,883,513 last week and $4,753,264 for the month of April (things seem to have picked up considerably in in May after the Alpha 3.23: Adventure Beckons update).
Star Citizen is considered one of the most controversial projects in the history of video games. In the 12 years since its crowdfunding campaign began, it has been called many things, including a hoax by those who wonder if the title will ever actually be released. Its virtual spaceships, some of which cost hundreds of dollars, are often the focus of criticism.
Alpha 3.23 arrived two months after CIG started talking about Star Citizen's 1.0 version, more than a decade after the game released its first crowdfunding campaign. Cloud Imperium Games boss Chris Roberts said that 2024 will see the release of Star Citizen Alpha 4.0.
All of that builds up to Star Citizen 1.0, which Roberts Space Industries said they feel has the features and content set to represent a commercial release.
We don't know what these creative developers will spend all that huge money on, but we sincerely hope that the aforementioned will contribute to the speedy completion of this fascinating title.
