For the platform's ninth birthday, Discord announced that they would turn to gaming again because they realized that 90% of their users belong to the gamer demographic.
The communication platform Discord turned nine years old this month and announced a turnaround in business for the second time in its history.
Gaming fans know that Discord started as a platform tailored to the needs of gamers, so in 2020 there was an attempt at rebranding when Discord announced that they wanted to be a platform for all users and all purposes of communication, not just for gamers and for gaming.
Four years later, Discord says that they realized that they should reduce the focus of the business and devote themselves exclusively to gaming and gamers. They came to this conclusion based on the fact that 90% of Discord's 200 million monthly active users play video games.
As part of that turnaround, Discord will prioritize the development and introduction of things that deepen gameplay, facilitate communication, and connect players across platforms. They also announced a new visual identity, also based on gamer activities.
In a recent announcement, Discord's Founder and CEO, Jason Citron, emphasized the company's renewed focus on its primary user base—gamers, who still represent 90% of their users.
Discord's CEO noted that the app will transition from a general community chat platform to one that enhances friendships through gaming and other shared interests. To support this goal, the company plans to completely change the app.
Those changes will include voice enhancements and improvements, video and streaming features. Moreover, they will simplify conversation engagement, and broaden Discord's reach to more devices.
