Zenimax utilises several manipulating mechanics in The Elder Scrolls Online to entice players to come back on a daily basis and mounts are one great example.
When you get to level 10, you are presented with a mount of your own but that sense of joy quickly wears off as you discover it doesn't really move all that much faster than the character does on foot.
This is because mounts modify the regular movement speed to 115 per cent, which is increased to 145 per cent when sprinting. In comparison, the player's character normally moves at 100 per cent speed while the sprint is at 140 per cent.
While such a small increase is disappointing, you can actually increase your mount's speed in several ways, including a passive skill, riding training and a constellation passive.
Passive skill
The passive skill is the best thing to grab as soon as you level up to 10 and find your mount. It takes only about 10 minutes and it will provide a further 30 per cent speed boost while mounted.
Open the character menu and look for the tower icon on top of your screen. That is the Alliance War tab. Click it and then choose "Below Level 50" and click "Icereach" to choose the campaign. Start it and you will be teleported to Cyrodiil.
Once you're in the new area, you will be given the quest "Welcome to Cyrodiil". Exhaust the dialogue with the NPC next to you and you will be given two choices - to continue the Alliance War tutorial or to skip. Do not skip the tutorial.
It is very easy to accidentally skip it so be careful who you talk to, the quest log will specifically mention the name of the general that will let you skip. Do not talk to him at all.
Instead, go to the NPC that will teach you about Transitus Shrines. Once you talk to them, utilise the Transitus Shrine to travel to the area the introductory quest is sending you to.
There, you will find another NPC that will teach you about siege weaponry. Complete that tutorial and once the quest is over, you will be awarded enough points to move your Alliance Rank to three. Now you need one skill point to put into Continuous Attack under Alliance War and Assault portions of your Skill menu. Voila, your mount is now much faster.
If you skipped the tutorial accidentally, you can look for the repeatable quest boards in the camp. Grab the scouting mission and keep repeating it until you earn enough reputation to rank up enough to get the skill. It is easy to do but much slower than just going with the tutorial.
Riding lessons
These can be purchased daily at a small cost from any stablemaster, an NPC that is usually found at the gates of any major city. They will train your mount in speed, stamina and inventory capacity but the catch is that you can only choose one per day.
Riding speed can be trained 60 times so you need to do it every day for two months straight to boost your riding speed properly.
The time gating can be bypassed by microtransactions although it's not something we would recommend.
Constellation passive
Constellation progression happens when a player is at max level and offers additional goals to play for. Under the Craft constellation, players can slot the Gifted Rider star which can eventually boost their riding speed by 10 per cent.
