In an extraordinary set of events, Hideo Kojima has confirmed that PHYSINT, his upcoming genre-defining action-espionage project, is heading to Xbox after PlayStation pulled out of the collaboration.
PlayStation cancelled the project back in June
Kojima revealed that Kojima Productions received unexpected notice from PlayStation Studios in mid-June that they were cancelling PHYSINT. Calling it an important project both personally and for the studio, Kojima said the team spent the following three months searching for a new partner, seeking advice and holding negotiations across the industry before landing on Xbox. He was clear that development itself never stopped, and PHYSINT is continuing to move forward.
Both sides are framing the split as amicable
PlayStation put out their own statement confirming the decision, saying they'd made the difficult call to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT after careful consideration, while stressing they still admire Kojima's vision for the game. PlayStation also pointed to their three-decade relationship with Kojima, saying it remains strong and that they look forward to continued collaboration with him and his studio in future.
Xbox call it an expansion, not a one-off rescue
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma framed the move as Kojima choosing where he wants to work, saying creators have options about where they bring their ideas to life and that Xbox is honoured he picked them. Kojima himself described it as expanding the relationship beyond OD, the studio's existing Xbox project, rather than a one-time deal. Notably, the partnership isn't staying confined to games either, with Xbox and Kojima Productions also confirming plans to collaborate on film and television.
We still haven't seen the game
It's worth stepping back here, Xbox fans. PHYSINT was first revealed back in 2024, and in all the time since, there's been no gameplay, no substantial footage, nothing beyond logos and vague framing like "genre-defining" and "here comes the feeling." Neither PlayStation's nor Kojima's statement explains why the cancellation happened, and nobody involved has said so directly.
That silence is worth reading between the lines of, cautiously. A project this opaque for this long, cancelled by a publisher rather than Kojima himself, points toward budget or timeline concerns rather than something like creative disagreement.
It certainly wouldn't be the first time a high-concept auteur-led project got too expensive or moved too slowly for a publisher's liking. To be clear, this is speculation rather than anything confirmed; PlayStation haven't given a reason, and there are plenty of other explanations that could fit just as well.
Platforms and release
PHYSINT is now in development for Xbox, published in partnership with Kojima Productions. No release date has been confirmed.
