Microsoft studio The Coalition have reportedly cancelled two smaller projects and are now fully focusing on the next Gears of War game according to insider Jeff Grubb.
Xbox studio known for the third-person shooter Gears of War , The Coalition , have reportedly cancelled two smaller projects to focus on Gears 6 development. The Coalition were rumoured to be working on a brand new IP, which would be a smaller game, not connected to the Gears universe.
This project was supposed to get The Coalition up to speed with Unreal Engine 5 , but reliable industry insider Jeff Grubb claims that the studio are no longer working on such a game.
"The Matrix demo that they've worked on with Epic...that was not the smaller project, that was a separate thing but it does seem like they feel like 'Well we are up to speed because we worked on that [The Matrix demo] and so they have cancelled that smaller project as well as another project," Grubb revealed.
He also stated that The Coalition will now move on fully to the next Gears of War game. "The studio will now move on fully to Gears 6 and is likely moved on to Gears 6 over the course of last year. That will be their next game."
Grubb explained that recent Microsoft layoffs could have something to do with the cancellation of these projects since The Coalition have lost some staff. Regardless, we're always sad when games get cancelled but it doesn't feel like these projects were far in development anyway and officially, they never existed.
Rumours suggested that the studio's impressive Unreal Engine 5 tech demo features some hints at the new IP, but guess we'll never find out about that.
Of course, despite Grubb's reliability, we suggest you take everything with a grain of salt until we get an official confirmation of The Coalition's plans. Rumours and leaks can often end up being false so don't take anything as gospel just yet.
