If you were hoping to play Larian Studios’s next RPG any time soon, it might be time to throw those expectations out the window. Studio boss Swen Vincke has given a brief update on Divinity, saying the team still has “a lot of work” ahead of them.
Vincke’s comments came in a post on X, responding to PC Gamer’s annual list of the top 100 PC games, which ranked Baldur's Gate 3 at number 1 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 at number 11. Vincke said he was proud of both placings, and encouraged to see Larian’s style of gameplay being recognised.
He went on to say the new Divinity is “built on the shoulders” of those two games, and is being made by “pretty much the same team”, along with a whole new group of talented developers. He finished by saying he hopes fans of both games will love the new one too.
Still a long way off
Vincke didn’t give a release window, and Larian haven’t announced one either. The game is expected to launch in early access first, as Larian’s last two RPGs did, and it’s being built on a new version of the studio’s engine.
It's interesting that Larian aren’t thinking small. One would think that the scope of Baldur's Gate 3 took its toll on the dev team, but when Divinity was revealed, it was billed as being even larger than Baldur’s Gate 3, which is no small claim given that game’s scale. It’s also turn-based, keeping it in line with Original Sin 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 rather than going in a different direction.
Divinity was revealed at The Game Awards 2025 with a dark cinematic teaser, following a mysterious statue that appeared in the Mojave Desert beforehand. It’s Larian’s first new game since Baldur’s Gate 3, which launched in 2023 to huge critical and commercial success and won Game of the Year at The Game Awards. So far, the game has only been confirmed for PC.
