Obsidian's fantasy RPG Avowed is one of the most anticipated Xbox titles this year and it won't be long before we get to play it later this Fall. As the game is gearing towards its release, after many years of development, you can bet that Obsidian are full hands on deck to push this one out of the door.
Obsidian are also getting some help from their sister studios to make Avowed the best game possible. According to reliable Xbox insider Jez Corden, Gears of War developer and Unreal Engine wizards The Coalition helped Obsidian port the project to Unreal Engine 5.3 with the support of Xbox's internal Advanced Technology Group.
"Was it already known Avowed had moved to Unreal Engine 5.3 with support from Xbox tech / The Coalition? Cuz it has," Corden posted on social media X.
The Coalition are no stranger to providing help to other Xbox studios who work on Unreal Engine. The studio also supported Undead Labs on State of Decay 3 to make them push the visuals to the next level.
Xbox's Advanced Technology Group (ATG) on the other hand are a studio that seems to be providing help on every Xbox project. The job of this team is to support developers directly by resolving issues and finding performance bottlenecks among other things.
Microsoft Gaming head previously mentioned that ATG worked with Bethesda on Starfield to help them optimise the game for Xbox platforms.
It's also interesting that Obsidian moved Avowed to Unreal Engine 5.3, which should help the team squeeze more performance from the game and potentially even make it look prettier. One of the notable features of the 5.3 version of the engine is the improvement to rendering that helps the devs achieve 60 FPS on consoles.
Corden also added that Avowed will have a much better reveal at the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase than it had at the Xbox Developer Direct earlier this year when players didn't really like the combat, which felt weightless and stiff.
Visually, the game looked pretty good I'd say so the only thing left for Obsidian to improve is the actual combat, which they are working on as per Game Director Carrie Patel, who confirmed they hear the players loud and clear and already have some changes in place to make the fighting experience much better for the player.
Avowed is set to launch in Fall 2024 on PC via Steam and Xbox app and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
