The highly-anticipated Marathon - an extraction shooter from Bungie and Sony's primary live-service hope for 2025 continues churning along in development, though it's still too early for a gameplay reveal.
Recently, the game's director gave an update with two new concept art pieces hinting at the progress of the game and two character classes entitled Thief and Stealth.
Marathon is developed and will be published by Bungie for the PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series X/S. Marathon will be the first standalone game released by Bungie since its acquisition by Sony in 2022.
In the wake of the missteps with Concord, many doubted whether Sony's live-service plans were still on track, but the company is forging ahead with Marathon.
The title first cropped up in mid-2023, as Bungie outlined its vision for an extraction shooter where players collect loot and try to keep it from others.
Since then, Marathon has been in a state of flux internally, including a change in directors. While actual gameplay footage is still kept well under wraps, the newest update points to development going according to schedule, with testing set to expand in 2025.
In Marathon, players assume the role of "Runners," cyber-mercenaries in a world of missions: scavenge resources while evading rival players attempting to steal their loot.
The game's high-octane structure promises high-stakes, competitive action, and gameplay is surely geared toward those who enjoy tough encounters.
Runners will be able to play solo or in squads of up to three players, exploring the game's futuristic settings for survival and reward.
While a full release in 2025 is uncertain, Marathon shapes up to be a high-on-adrenaline experience that seems positioned to carve its niche within Sony's live-service lineup.
