As expected, Baldur's Gate 3 is a massive hit on Steam. The latest RPG from Larian Studios is the second-biggest launch of the year on Valve's platform with a peak of over 470k concurrent players at one point.
Potentially, the concurrent player count could still grow beyond that number over the weekend but nonetheless, this is still a major success for the development team, who have been working on Baldur's Gate 3 for more than six years.
Harry Potter action adventure Hogwarts Legacy is still undisputed as number one on the list of the biggest Steam launches of 2023. With over 800k concurrent players, Warner Bros' title will probably stay number one unless Bethesda's Starfield takes that crown.
But anyway, for Baldur's Gate 3, a game that was in early access for years, this is quite an achievement. Add the PlayStation 5 launch, which is happening in just over a month, and there's certainly potential for truly incredible launch sales for this long-awaited hardcore RPG.
While the PC is the target platform for Larian's games, we expect to see strong numbers on the console too as Larian have done a pretty good job in advertising the game and using the PlayStation 5 exclusivity to hype up the release.
Baldur's Gate 3 is also expected to launch on Xbox Series X|S consoles but that won't be happening until early next year due to the ongoing technical issues that the dev team has with the split screen feature on Series S.
Larian said that Baldur's Gate 3 does not have any exclusivity with PlayStation 5 and that the only reason for not having a simultaneous console launch is due to the abovementioned Series S problems. We'll take their word for it, but we wouldn't be surprised if Sony jumped in with some money to keep it locked to their platform as a big RPG release, just when Starfield is launching on Xbox.
