Larian Studios have been on a roll for a long while now and even though that might be enough for some fans to get them hyped about Baldur's Gate 3, others may need more persuading.
Thankfully, there are plenty of positive signs pointing to the game being a banger for all the CRPG lovers out there.
With that said, let's get into the specifics of why people are right to be optimistic about Larian's latest venture.
Past track record
Right off the bat, you have the classic reason for believing something in the future will be a success - a good track record. While Divinity and Baldur's Gate series are not in the same world, it is worth noting that the studio kept iterating over the course of 15 years, constantly improving their works and almost striking perfection with Divinity: Original Sin.
They did not stop at "almost perfect" and kept striving towards the unachievable goal with Divinity: Original Sin 2 as it took all the good sides of the first one, polished out the rougher ones and made improvements all around. With what we've seen from Baldur's Gate 3, it definitely looks like they are sticking with the same formula and the game is gearing up to be more than DOS2, the previous biggest success of the team.
It is bigger and still better
Divinity: Original Sin 2 was a huge game that took dozens of hours to go through and Baldur's Gate 3 will be even bigger.
This will be clear from the very first moments when you enter the character creation, which will eventually feature 11 races and 31 subraces. If that milestone doesn't paint a clear picture of BG3's size, how about having three times more cinematic dialogue than the three Lord of the Rings novels combined or having more than twice the length of Game of Thrones worth of cutscenes?
While this proves it's bigger, what makes it better? The glimpse into the game of course, one that the players already had a glimpse into and it was one that left them with happy smiles on their faces.
Larian's reputation and transparency
Reputation is an important thing for the future of any studio and while we witnessed CD Projekt Red ruining theirs with Cyberpunk 2077, there are indicators that Baldur's Gate 3 will not be anything like that for Larian.
These devs have managed to keep their reputation unsullied thus far and one of the best ways to figure out why BG3 isn't a disaster brewing behind the scenes is because a third of it is not behind the scenes at all. The game has been in Early Access for three years now, laid bare for anyone curious to see.
Steam reviews
So what did the players see? Obviously, it was something great because the Early Access content, which only has Act 1, is currently sitting at 88 per cent positive reviews with the recent ones being even better, at 93 per cent positive.
There are three acts in total and if they are anything like the first one, gamers are in for a banger.
Swen Vincke
Last, but by no means least, there is the matter of the man at the helm - Swen Vincke. The term often takes a literal meaning as you can see Swen in a full plate armour during community updates, announcements and videos simply showing the mood behind the scenes.
I did not mention this as a reason to be optimistic just because I saw the head of a studio walking around in armour but because it is one of the indicators of a man devoted to fantasy worlds and creating them. Rivellon adventures were beautiful in their own right and with Vincke making a new world for dreamers to immerse themselves in, I dare say we are about find an even more intricate one.
