Sony's PlayStation 6 and Microsoft's next-gen Xbox known as Project Helix could be one step closer to becoming a reality. Leaker by the name of KeplerL2 has stated that both chips have hit the tape-out stage. This means they are likely finalized and ready to be sent off to the manufacturers.
This also brings us to some GPU compute specs as well. PS6 is rumored to hit 40 TFLOPS while Project Helix is said to reach 56 TFLOPS. Of course nothing has been confirmed by Sony or Microsoft just yet.
PS6 And Project Helix Chips Have Hit Tape Out
KeplerL2 posted this news on NeoGAF when discussing that the chips for the PS6 and Project Helix have taped out. They also stated that PS6 will be 40 TFLOPS and Project Helix will reach 56 TFLOPS.
When a chip reaches tape out it means the chips are completed and ready to be sent to semiconductor manufacturers to be created. It doesn't mean the actual consoles are being made or that everything is in stone.
This would line up with both consoles launching in 2027 which many have been speculating.
PS6 Will Be 40 TFLOPS?
As of right now PS6 is believed to reach 40 TFLOPS which is much lower than what some thought it could reach. There were rumours that it could reach 80 TFLOPS as well.
It's always worth noting that TFLOPS are not a true indicator of how powerful a GPU can be. Many things go into making a GPU more powerful for gaming and TFLOPS only tells you how many floating point operations it can perform.
There have been rumours that the PS6 will see a big jump in ray tracing compared to the PS5 as well as AI powered compute. These specs are also unconfirmed.
Project Helix Rumoured To Reach 56 TFLOPS
Project Helix will be able to reach 56 TFLOPS. Which puts it above the PS6's 40 TFLOPS if true. However again we can't go off of just TFLOPS when it comes to gaming.
Specs could change as well and Microsoft hasn't officially announced anything about their next gen system.
