A new report says that Sony has once again tapped AMD to build the chip that will go into the next-generation PlayStation 6 console. According to a Reuters article, this was allegedly nailed down as far back as 2022, but such a deal represents a big call on part of Sony's future in gaming hardware.
When selecting the chip manufacturer for the PS6, two companies were considered: AMD and Intel. Finally, two facts were most crucial to Sony's reasoning.
Firstly, negotiations between the parties were quite cumbersome since Intel and Sony could not agree on profit margins; secondly, for Sony AMD was always the first preference due to backward compatibility issues.
If Sony had gone with Intel, this would have made it much more difficult to achieve compatibility of the PlayStation 6 with games that ran on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
Assuming the presence of AMD, it's likely that the PS6 will support games from the past generations of consoles, which many gamers concern themselves with due to their heavy investment in game libraries.
Yet, even while maintaining hopes, we are years out from the official launch of the PlayStation 6, and hence, any concrete information regarding the full capabilities of the device is purely speculative at this point.
This move, for now, tightens the screw further between AMD and Sony and hints that the PlayStation 6 is going to be performance-oriented while also giving heed to compatibility. As more news is broadcast, it is up to the fans and analysts to wait and see how this partnership is going to shape the future of console gaming.
