New updated look for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn's protagonist and his sibling

Following feedback from its beta, Owlcat Games have recast the voice of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn’s male protagonist, with Blythe Melin now voicing both the Captain and his twin brother, J. The Captain also has a redesigned default look.

If your game is a sci-fi RPG, I suggest you change the look of your protagonist. Apparently, it’s a hot thing right now. Following Archetype Entertainment’s recent redesign of Jun Aslan in Exodus, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn’s male hero has also had a glow-up. Owlcat Games have revealed a redesigned default look for the game’s male Captain, along with a new voice actor, Blythe Melin, who will voice both the Captain and his twin brother.

According to the devs, the recast decision came after analysing player feedback from the game’s beta, which led the studio to replace the male protagonist’s original voice.

A less generic Captain

The Captain is now fully customisable as it should be in a deep, branching RPG, but Owlcat say a good default look still matters, since it’s the starting point for most players’ own versions. The studio have redesigned him to move away from what they describe as a standard military look, adding more detail and polish so he fits more naturally into the world of The Expanse.

Because the Captain has an identical twin, J, the redesign applies to him too.

Blythe Melin voices both twins

The Captain’s new voice belongs to Blythe Melin, whose previous credits include Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Diablo IV and Ready or Not. He also voices J, who Owlcat describe as more carefree and relaxed than his brother.

Melin called voicing both characters “an incredible joy and a unique challenge”, saying the hardest part was making sure the two brothers didn’t sound too similar or feel “one-note”. He explained that the Captain is an avatar for the player, while J is an established character with his own personality, which gave him a natural way to set them apart. He also credited the game’s writers and directors.

Owlcat say they’ll reveal the voice of the female Captain and the rest of the cast at a later date.
