Sony announced that PlayStation 5 will get a slim version during the holiday season 2023.
They didn't specify the exact date but it is fair to guess it will be around mid-December in order to be able to sell as many consoles as possible while everyone is in a spending frenzy.
This new version of PlayStation 5 will come in regular form, capable of reading discs, as well as Digital Edition which will rely on downloading the games but with a twist.
Namely, the Digital Edition is upgradeable as you can purchase an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive later on, at the price of $80 | €120 | ₤100.
As for the consoles themselves, MSRP is as follows:
- US
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – $500
- PS5 Digital Edition – $450
- Europe
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – €550
- PS5 Digital Edition – €450
- UK
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ₤480
- PS5 Digital Edition – ₤390
- Japan
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 66,980 JPY (includes tax)
- PS5 Digital Edition – 59,980 JPY (includes tax)
The new dimensions will have the total size of the console reduced by more than 30 per cent while the weight reduction is expected to be between 18 and 24 per cent.
A horizontal stand will be included with the new PS5s regardless of which edition you buy but the vertical stand will be sold separately, at the price of $30 | €30 | ₤25 | 3,980 JPY.
Finally, there will be a pile of new colour covers coming in early 2024, with the price starting at $55 | €55 | ₤45 | 7,480 JPY.
