PS5 Pro system update could enable Enhanced PSSR by default for supported games
Sony is beta testing a PS5 Pro firmware update that would automatically enable Enhanced PSSR on games with standard PSSR support, eliminating the need for individual game patches

Key Points from the Article

  • The feature includes an "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" toggle that would be enabled by default but can be turned off if compatibility or performance issues occur
  • Enhanced PSSR would still require games to have initial PSSR support from developers, but wouldn't need additional patches to access the upgraded version
  • Sony is shifting from its original approach of letting developers manually implement Enhanced PSSR support to a more automatic and inclusive system
  • The feature is currently only available in an invite-only beta for PS5 Pro owners with no full release date announced

A new PS5 Pro beta update reportedly enables Enhanced PSSR by default for supported games, while still allowing users to disable the feature if needed.

Sony is said to be beta testing a PS5 Pro system software update that would automatically enable Enhanced PSSR on supported games. The feature could give players access to improved image quality on more games without having to wait for individual game patches.

ResetEra member Nicoreese says that Sony has started sending out beta invites to PS5 Pro owners that detail a firmware update adding an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” toggle option.

Unlike the option found on current PS5 Pros, it would be enabled by default though can be turned off in the system settings menu should players run into any compatibility or performance issues.

Currently, Enhanced PSSR is only enabled in games that have been patched by developers to include support for Sony’s newer AI-driven upscaling tech. Should this rumored beta be accurate, any game that supports the standard version of PSSR would automatically take advantage of the enhanced version without needing a game update.

Enhanced PSSR still would not be enabled by default on every PS5 game. Titles that didn’t originally come with PSSR support would need to be patched by developers before players would be able to utilize the upgraded feature.

Sony PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny previously shared that the company originally wanted to leave it up to developers to implement Enhanced PSSR support when they saw fit. Forcing players to wait on game patches allowed developers to maintain control over who would be compatible while also clearly communicating to players which games did in fact support Enhanced PSSR.

Automatically applying Enhanced PSSR to any game that supported standard PSSR suggests Sony may be taking a more inclusive approach. While it would still require some level of initial support from developers, more PS5 games would be able to utilize Enhanced PSSR without needing to fully revisit their code.

The automatic Enhanced PSSR feature currently seems to only be included in a beta available by invitation to PS5 Pro owners. A full release date has not yet been mentioned.
