Rune functionality will be somewhat different when the new Guild Wars 2 expansion hits as it will separate into two inventory slots.

ArenaNet announced some of the major changes that will be coming with the Secrets of the Obscure expansion, including the Relic system.

Namely, Guild Wars 2 already has something similar with the runes but the devs are looking to separate the special effects from these upgrades and potentially add a few more to the mix.

When the Relic system goes live, all the bonuses for having six same runes will be removed as they will be equippable in a new inventory slot.

This way, if you like certain rune set's stats but not the bonus, you will be able to get the best of both worlds. The change will undoubtedly impact the pricing of runes so you might want to get rid of any high-price ones that you've been holding before the update hits.

After the update, the special effect will go to the Relic slot.

ArenaNet showed a few of the Relic effects that can be acquired, such as Relic of the Zepyrite which spawns crystals on Elite skill use and it provides Protection and Resolution boons to allies.

Relic of the Wizard's Tower, meanwhile, will also activate with Elite skill usage but it gives a projectile-reflecting barrier and pulls enemies towards you.

Players who obtained Legendary runes may be worried about their efforts losing their worth but it will still be highly convenient to be able to just switch runes on the fly.
