Guild Wars 2 is going to change the way additional weapon proficiencies work with the Secrets of the Obscure expansion and the players can get a taste from June 29 to July 2, 2023.
This beta event will add a temporary character slot to your account, allowing you to test the proficiencies without having to use the associated elite specialisations.
As for the proficiencies themselves, players will eventually be able to use the ones previously connected to elite specs as well as a host of new ones not connected to any of them.
Weapon proficiencies previously tied to elite specs
- Guardian: Axe (main hand), sword (off-hand), longbow
- Revenant: Shield (off-hand), greatsword, short bow
- Warrior: Dagger (main and off-hand), pistol (off-hand), torch (off hand)
- Engineer: Mace (main hand), sword (main hand), hammer
- Ranger: Dagger (main hand), hammer, staff
- Thief: Scepter (main hand), rifle, staff
- Elementalist: Sword (main hand), warhorn (off-hand), hammer
- Mesmer: Axe (main hand), dagger (main hand), shield (off hand)
- Necromancer: Pistol (main hand), torch (off-hand), greatsword
Keep in mind that you will no longer need to have associated expansions or elite specialisations to get these weapons for your core build.
Some outliers will get additional abilities. For example, a Berserker Warrior will get a new Primal Burst ability for the main hand dagger.

These will likely not be part of the beta as they are coming after the expansion's launch on August 22, 2023. That said, ArenaNet noted they will hold a beta event later in the year to test the new weapons out.
