It seems like Battlefield 2042 may be going out with a bang. New leaks from trusted Battlefield dataminer temporyal reveal that EA and DICE are working on a shockingly huge content drop for the game – which could be the series latest title’s last hurrah before Battlefield 6 releases on October 10, 2025.
The headline-grabber? A World War 2 playlist, which will let you relive Battlefield’s storied past. According to datamined text, the mode will feature the return to 1942 on Iwo Jima in this limited-time Breakthrough mode with World War 2 weapons and soldiers.
What’s in the Alleged Battlefield 2042 Update?
The leak outlines a significant batch of new content:
New Map
- Iwo Jima
New Weapons
- Prototype (“Riverdweller”)
- KFS2000 (FN F2000)
- GM6 Lynx
New Vault Vehicles
- A-10 Warthog
- SU-25TM Frogfoot
Additional Content
- Pax Armata-themed cosmetics
If leak proves true, the update could roll out later this month or in early September, making it the last major push before DICE shifts focus fully on Battlefield 6.
A Lookback at the Last Update
May 2025’s Battlefield 2042 patch included more QoL fixes, bugfixes, and a reprise of the hugely popular Battle of Nordvik event. Players also saw a major security update on PC, as the game now requires Secure Boot for anti-cheat purposes.
All of these additions along with some solid balance changes and specialist tweaks further expanded the lore and explained some gameplay in game via the in-game Codex, showing that EA is invested in listening to feedback to improve the experience for players.
Multiplayer-Only to the End?
Battlefield 2042 was released in November of 2021, and one of its first announcements was that the game would not feature a single-player campaign, something that had always been a staple of the series until this point.
It would also feature full crossplay for the first time in a Battlefield game, with players competing in large-scale multiplayer only battles.
With this World War 2 playlist update, if it does indeed see the light of day, Battlefield 2042 will have a proper send off, both commemorating the series past and neatly wrapping up its most ambitious iteration yet.
