Battlefield 6 is in its open beta period, which has seen the game set some records but has also hit a snag with Valorant players.
It turns out that the anti-cheat program used by EA’s latest first-person shooter, as well as Riot Games’ Valorant, cannot both be active at the same time and if Valorant is present on your computer, Battlefield 6 may not launch.
There is some background here, though; both games share similar kernel-level anti-cheat programs, which has required some players to make a decision over which they can keep.
Anti-Cheat issues explained
Members of the Battlefield subreddit first started posting in threads about Battlefield 6 and Valorant not being able to be played together. Players explained the error they received, a pop-up which said “Security Violation” and that the game could not be launched because of a “general software incompatibility”.
This suggested they should uninstall or modify settings of the general software in question, in this instance Valorant. They explained the situation more generally, saying that the anti-cheat programs in Battlefield 6 and Valorant work in the same way; through kernel-level driver code with secure boot access, meaning they can alert if they are being cheated.
Vanguard, Valorant’s anti-cheat, will not run with Javelin (Battlefield 6’s anti-cheat) if they both detect one another.
Biggest Open Beta ever, but not without its problems
This news comes at a time where Battlefield 6‘s open beta has already been a record-breaker. Battlefield 6‘s test build has blocked over 330,000 cheating attempts already, while also surpassing 500,000 concurrent players on Steam for a while.
This new record broke the previous record of the platform’s largest number of concurrent players, set by Call of Duty. The latter developer, Activision, has also been losing ground in other ways recently, with former Blizzard president Mike Morhaime saying in an interview earlier this year that “Battlefield has a great chance to boot stomp this year.”
Morhaime added that such competition will be good for the FPS genre overall, whether people take issue with the back-and-forth or not. Battlefield 6 launches on October 10, so players will need to decide whether they keep Valorant or Battlefield 6 if they want to play either while this is an issue, or wait and see if EA and Riot Games can come up with a fix for this problem soon.
