Steam have released a major update that will allow players to make specific game purchases private, among other things. If you're opted into the Steam Client Beta, you will notice there's a new version of the shopping cart when checking out on the store.
Previously, when you added a specific game to your cart and wanted to check out, Steam would ask you if the purchase was for your own account or a gift for someone else. From now on, there will be a third option - "Purchase for myself - Private".
If you select this option, Steam will automatically hide this game and no one except you will be able to see it. People in your friends list won't be able to see that you own the game, in-game status, playtime or activity in that game.
In addition to the option during checkout, you will be able to mark games as private in your Steam Library too (Game page > Settings > Manage...). This will certainly come in handy if you have the urge to play some questionable games but don't want anyone to know about that. Wink, wink.
There is no official release date for this update just yet but since it has already arrived to Beta users, it's probably just around the corner for everyone else, too.
You can check out the official FAQ about the Private games feature on Steam for more details.
