Valve, the owner of Steam, is being sued for overcharging 14 million people in the UK

Valve, the owner of Steam, is facing a lawsuit in the UK for allegedly overpaying more than 14 million players. The lawsuit claims that Valve forces publishers to enter into price parity agreements, preventing lower prices on competing platforms.

Valve, the owner of the largest platform for the digital distribution of PC games - Steam, is getting sued in the United Kingdom for 656 million pounds, or 780 million euros, for allegedly "overpaying" more than 14 million players from that country, writes the BBC.

The lawsuit states that Valve "forces" publishers to enter into so-called price parity agreements with all other platforms, which prevents lower prices for games on competing platforms. Ultimately, they say, it hurts players who overpay for games and other digital content.

Digital rights activist Vicki Shotbolt is convinced that Steam charges too high a commission, and besides harming players, Valve is trying to push the competition out of the market by doing so, she adds.

Sony will be tried for the same

Shotbolt and Milberg London, a law firm specializing in such lawsuits, where an individual sues companies on behalf of the masses, said in a joint statement that the Competition Act is there to protect consumers and ensure the fair functioning of the market, and Valve, they say, is not complying with it.

By the way, the fact that the indictment against Sony was recently confirmed to the same law firm also indicates that it is not just some benign attention-grabbing.

In the case that was allowed to go to court (if Sony's lawyers failed to overturn it), Sony is being accused of the same thing – excessive pricing and a position that allows it to dictate prices on other platforms.
