Studio Orbifold, who are working on remastering the entire Half-Life 2 using Nvidia's RTX Remix have today revealed that players will get to preview their work on March 18, thanks to a demo that features levels from Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt.
Just like the full version, which will be free to owners of Half-Life 2 on Steam, the demo will feature path tracing, frame generation, DLSS 4, ray reconstruction with the new AI transformer model and fully remade textures and assets to bring Valve's masterpiece closer to modern video game releases.
The team also confirmed that the remaster uses RTX Skin tech to enhance Father Grigori, headcrabs and zombies models while the entire game has been relit, replacing the twenty-year old tech with the latest lighting systems.
Obviously all of this modern tech will cost so you'll need quite the hardware to run Half-Life 2 RTX remaster. To play the game at the level of detail shown in the screenshots in this article, Nvidia recommend a GeForce RTX 5000 series graphics cards but state that there will be plenty of video settings available to ensure players who don't own the latest hardware can experience the game.
Here's how the game performs on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs with DLSS 4, Multi Frame Generation 10X on average at 4K, using the Ultra Preset.
Half-Life 2 RTX Remaster will be a standalone release on Steam which means you will be able to purchase it separately from the original. The game does not have a release date at the moment but we expect to hear about that in the coming months.
