Sony’s next-gen PlayStation has once again been the subject of pricing rumours, with new chatter indicating that the PS6 could arrive with a considerably higher price tag than expected.
Renowned hardware insider Kepler_ L2 claims the price to manufacture the next PlayStation has increased dramatically since previous rumours.
Could PS6 Cost $999 To Launch?
Should the rumours prove true, Kepler_ L2’s latest information certainly brings the notion of a $999 PlayStation 6 into the conversation. The rumour centres around Sony’s digital edition.
The leak also indicates that Sony wouldn’t have much to gain by delaying the PS6 even with higher manufacturing costs. Kepler_ L2 claims Sony has little reason to hold off on the next PlayStation, as the hardware design has been reportedly locked in for months.
PS6 Bill of Materials $200 Higher Than Estimate
Via NeoGAF, source Kepler_ L2 said that the PlayStation 6 has gone up about $200 in its bill of materials over previous estimates. Earlier estimates placed the manufacturing cost at around $760, which would’ve allowed Sony to sell the PlayStation 6 at a reasonable $699 out of the gate.
With this new estimate, however, Kepler_ L2 says Sony would have to markup the price significantly in order to avoid losing money on each console sold. They now expect the standard PS6 to cost $999, with that price potentially carrying over to the Digital Edition as well.
Sony has yet to announce any specifications, release timeframe, or pricing information for the PS6. Prices listed above are purely speculative until Sony announces their next-generation console. Sony has stated they will be investing in next-gen hardware.
