Sony’s next PlayStation console has once again become a topic of rumours, though the newest ones indicate that fans shouldn’t stress about another delay just yet.
Although there have been several reports that shortages may delay the PS6’s launch, sources are now saying that Sony’s next-gen console is on track to launch as soon as 2027.
Some industry insiders have said that there’s too much development completed on Sony’s next console for them to delay it several years into the future. If true, then the next-gen console battle may be starting much sooner than many had anticipated.
KeplerL2, a hardware insider, began replying to rumours that claim Sony may hold off on the PS6 until 2028 or even later. While the leaker didn’t give any evidence to debunk the delay claims, they did shoot down the rumours and agreed with posts that said Sony has too much development completed to hold off on a release.
Posts on NeoGAF have said Sony has most likely already signed contracts with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to produce the custom CPUs that will be in the PS6. It’s also said that Sony has most hardware research and development completed, which is reportedly hundreds of millions of dollars of work.
There’s also been another argument floating around about memory prices. Some rumours have claimed that Sony may delay the PS6 until memory and other components become cheaper. Analysts mentioned that there’s a possibility prices may not even drop in the next few years.
KeplerL2 also previously stated that AMD has begun validation on PS6 hardware. Validation is a stage in console development that typically occurs when the development of a console is near completion.
Reports recently surfaced that both the PS6 and next Xbox may not battle over graphical differences. Instead, both companies may simply go for different performance targets.
Instead of one console having significantly better graphics than the other, they could potentially go for higher frame rates. One may even go for 4K output at 60 FPS while the other goes for 4K output at 144 FPS.
