Leaks have indicated that Sony plans on rolling out a significant software update for the PS5 Pro dubbed PSSR 2.0. If accurate, this update could enable games on Sony’s latest console to look and run even better than before.
Industry leaks have pointed to a window between January and March for when this new software update will arrive. It’s said the primary purpose of the update is to enhance visual quality further, improve performance consistency and allow developers more flexibility when targeting increased frame rates/resolutions.
Chief among the new features is said to be an implementation nearly identical to AMD’s FSR4 upscaling technology. Essentially, this update would give the PS5 Pro the ability to output sharper, more detailed graphics while still retaining robust performance. Expect to see sharper images overall thanks to improved reconstruction, and games will even be able to output better graphics at lower internal resolutions.
Games with a frame rate cap of around 70–80 fps could even see noticeable increases due to additional hardware usage. Sony is also said to be implementing new debugging tools that will allow developers much finer control over each console’s graphics and performance modes.
Improved support for lower-resolution games is said to be another critical aspect of the software update. PSSR 2.0 will reportedly allow older games to achieve far higher output resolutions without actually receiving a graphical upgrade from the developers behind them.
Reports list the following as potential features included in PSSR 2.0:
- Expected rollout between January and March.
- Implementation of FSR-Like technology.
- Improved image reconstruction.
- Possible frame rate increases.
- Support for higher output resolutions in older games.
- Additional debugging tools for developers.
Keep in mind that all of the above is speculative until we receive an official confirmation from Sony regarding next year’s big software update for the PS5 Pro.
