Sony’s next generation hardware has been subject of fresh rumours, with claims that memory specifications for both the PlayStation 6 and new PlayStation handheld have leaked.
This information stems from leaker KeplerL2 who posted some new technical details regarding the PS6’s hardware across several threads. From what is being claimed, Sony is expected to equip its future hardware with an extremely high memory configuration that if true would be a step above current gen PS hardware.
Of course this has yet to be confirmed by Sony but it will certainly have fans speculating over the power next gen PS consoles could have.
PlayStation 6 Memory Configuration Explained
KeplerL2 predicts that the PS6 could include as much as 30 GB of GDDR7 memory. This may sound weird but having tons of VRAM can be extremely beneficial.
Their idea was that Sony could:
- Use 3 GB GDDR7 memory chips
- Place them in clamshell formation
- Use a 160-bit memory bus
This would allow Sony to cut down on the bus width and trade it for massive increases in memory speed. Giving the console a total bandwidth of around 640 GB/s.
This would put it leaps and bounds above the PlayStation 5 and other current generation consoles. More VRAM will allow for bigger open worlds, more demanding ray tracing, and beefier AI systems in future games.
PlayStation Handheld Could Match Premium Devices
KeplerL2 also makes some comments about Sony’s highly anticipated PlayStation handheld in the same leak. Project Canis may come packing 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory. If true, these specs would put Sony’s handheld firmly into premium territory.
This would put it on par with some of the highest spec’d handhelds on the market today like the ROG Ally X. The extra memory will also give games room to spare with engine requirements, higher-resolution textures, and future-proofing system level multitasking.
He also mentioned previously that the handheld wouldn’t be able to outperform PS5 hardware. These specs however hint that Sony will be striving for a premium experience rather than a handheld purely for light gaming.
What This Means for Sony’s Next Generation
Leaks regarding the PS6 have surfaced intermittently throughout the last twelve months, even speculating a possible launch year as soon as 2027. Should this rumoured memory be true, it would seem Sony is focusing on bandwidth and efficient throughput rather than just quantity.
Of course, like always, take this with a grain of salt until we receive confirmation from Sony. However, seeing how accurate KeplerL2 has been with past technical leaks, these claims are enticing to think about as we wait for more news on the PlayStation 6.
