Astro Bot may be on its way to becoming PlayStation’s next flagship franchise. During the most recent earnings report (via Genki), Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and Head of Studio Business Group Hermen Hulst called Astro Bot "one of PlayStation’s most exciting recent successes," highlighting its strong reception from both players and critics.
The PlayStation 5 platformer, developed by Team Asobi, has gained significant attention for its charming design, polished gameplay, and creative level design. Since its release, Astro Bot has received widespread acclaim, scoring 95/100 on OpenCritic and 94/100 on Metacritic and picking up the Game of the Year award at Geoff Keighley's big event.
According to Hulst, the game was a “smash hit,” which has led Sony to consider a long-term future for the character and the series.
“Our ambition is to grow Astro Bot into an enduring and iconic franchise for PlayStation,” Hulst said. This suggests that Sony plans to invest further in the brand, potentially expanding it through sequels or even cross-media appearances.
Originally introduced as a tech demo character for PlayStation and later featured in Astro’s Playroom on PS5, Astro has steadily become a fan favourite. The full release of Astro Bot helped solidify the character’s place among PlayStation’s rich lineup, showing that family-friendly platformers still have a strong place in the current console generation. Turns out it's not all about Call of Duty, sports games and GTA, after all?
While no new projects have been officially announced, Hulst’s comments indicate that Astro could become a regular part of PlayStation Studios’ roadmap. As Sony continues to diversify its first-party portfolio, the success of Astro Bot may open the door for more lighthearted and innovative titles in the future. Just stop with those live service games already, Sony.
For now, fans can hopefully look forward to more post-launching content for Astro Bot, while Sony are figuring out new ways to expand the beloved robotic mascot’s reach.
