Supermassive Games has released a new gameplay trailer for Directive 8020, their highly anticipated sci-fi horror narrative game and the next entry in the beloved Dark Pictures Anthology series. The trailer premiered during the Future Games Show and showcased a new gameplay mechanic called Turning Points.
The new Turning Points mechanic will allow players to rewind the story to critical decisions, replaying choices to explore alternate outcomes and previously missed content. This will certainly add an extra layer of interactivity and replay value to the branching narrative structure that The Dark Pictures games are known for.
Players looking for a more unforgiving challenge will get an option to choose Survivor Mode, which removes the ability to rewind and gives a more classic Dark Pictures experience.
Will Doyle, Creative Director at Supermassive Games, described Turning Points as a step forward for player agency and storytelling, giving users more flexibility in how they experience the narrative.
Set aboard the spaceship Cassiopeia, Directive 8020 follows a crew confronting a growing alien threat. The latest footage showcases the Scanner tool, used to detect human or alien crew members, as well as tense encounters with shape-shifting enemies, including “Hunter Variant” versions of key characters.
Attendees of Summer Game Fest had the chance to play an early demo of the game, which highlights tools such as the Tap Strap, Messenger System, and Wedge Tool, and culminates in a moral choice involving a detained crewmate.
Directive 8020 is scheduled for release on October 2, 2025, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam).
