Mojang has raised the minimum and recommended specs to run Minecraft: Java Edition. The recommended specs have gone up quite a bit as Minecraft transitions further to Vulkan rendering engine support.
Recommended memory requirements for Minecraft now sit at 16GB of RAM. Mojang says Minecraft uses around 4GB of memory itself and recommends the rest be allocated to your operating system, Minecraft launcher, and background applications.
Minimum memory requirements have also increased. You will now need at least 8GB RAM on a system with a dedicated graphics card or 12GB of RAM if you’re using integrated graphics.
Recommended GPUs have been updated as well. Mojang now recommends one of the following graphics cards:
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060
- AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT
- Intel Arc A580
Updated minimum and recommended requirements were published following Minecraft: Java Edition Update 26.2, which added the Vulkan graphics engine to Minecraft on June 16.
Vulkan is set to fully replace OpenGL in the following weeks. "Advanced graphics features will continue to appear over time and Vulkan will allow the game to scale with newer hardware better than ever." stated Mojang. "This includes being able to run modern graphics APIs like Vulkan."
New system requirements listed by Mojang state that the old ones were "built around hardware and graphics APIs that are over a decade old" and did not accommodate for the needs necessary to support Minecraft's current technical aspect while running smoothly.
These new specifications will allow players to experience Minecraft's continued graphics upgrades as they are developed during its transition to Vulkan.
