NetEase Games and Everstone Studio have revealed Hutuo, a new region for Where Winds Meet, launching November 13. It’s set in an active warzone, and the studio says it’s the game’s most gripping narrative arc to date.
Watch the Hutuo reveal trailer:
What to Expect from Hutuo
Hutuo’s story is built around ‘Xia’, the game’s code of justice and guardianship. The ruling powers have failed, and players have to decide whether to obey the crumbling throne or side with their sworn companions to protect civilians.
It all leads to the battle of Zhongdu Bridge, where northern invaders are pushing across the border and players stand between the army and a stream of displaced refugees.
The region also tells smaller stories through its environment, like soldiers defying brutal orders and ordinary people hiding refugees.
The timing is a big one for the game. Eric, head of publishing for Where Winds Meet, said Hutuo follows a major milestone for the team:
“We reached an unforgettable milestone this August when the game welcomed over 100 million players worldwide.”
“Being the first to bring an authentic Wuxia open world to the global stage was deeply humbling, proving that the spirit of this genre speaks to hearts across every border. Yet our vision goes beyond martial choreography. With Hutuo, we wanted to push the genre into rarely charted territory: full-scale war. While a lone swordsman’s blade seems almost powerless against the crushing tide of armies, this chapter explores how the spirit of ‘Xia’ shines brightest in the torrent of conflict, revealing a universal heroism of sacrifice and guardianship that resonates across all cultures.”
New Gameplay in Hutuo Update
In the Hutuo River Campaign, you’ll fight Xiao Han, a Khitan general empowered by Blood-forged Super Armor. Two new World Bosses tied to Hutuo’s past are also out in the open world: Bingshen at Moonveil Knoll and the Khitan shaman Yelu Abuli.
The update also adds the Dual Spears martial art, choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping, the action director behind Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, who serves as the game’s Global Action Consultant. It launches in late November and combines two styles, Light Spears for offence and Heavy Spears for stance-breaking counterattacks.
Two board game modes round out the update. In Horse Racing Chess, you play as a living piece on the board, rolling dice to race while running into familiar Mystic Skills and scenes from your Jianghu journey. Jianghu Tactics is the more tactical of the two, with players building custom lineups through positioning, gear allocation and round-by-round synergies.
Anniversary and Preview Stream
Hutuo arrives alongside the game’s 1st Global Anniversary. The studio promises its most generous in-game rewards since launch, for both new and returning players.
On CN, players could pick one free outfit worth 2,580 Pearls during the anniversary celebration. Whether this is coming to the global version has yet to be confirmed.
A special preview stream goes live on November 2 (UTC) on the official channels, covering Hutuo gameplay and the anniversary details.
