Why some champions in League of Legends use mana, some have no resource at all, and some use energy is all down to balancing in the end. Patch 12.15 will change some of that.

There are three main resources that champions use in League of Legends  to cast their abilities. And, while at first, Riot Games handed these out thematically, with only a light focus given to balance, these days balance is everything.

The resources are, of course, mana, energy, and, in the case of Garen for example, nothing. In patch 12.15, Riot Games are changing energy champions to better fit in the modern times, as energy spending and acquisition changes from champion to champion, and older ones are falling behind new releases .

" These are mainly champions whose energy costs haven’t kept up with the game post durability,” wrote Riot Phroxzon. “We like where Kennen’s energy costs are, so we’re buffing something else instead."

Due to the unique nature of energy as a resource, namely one that is as quick to spend as it is to regenerate, there are only five champions in the game who use it:

  • Akali
  • Kennen
  • Lee Sin
  • Shen
  • Zed

As we can see, of all of these, only Kennen's cost scaling is currently up to par with the requirements of the meta. The rest are unable to do what they do best, and champions such as Akali and Lee Sin, who have the potential to carry games in the right hands, have been nonexistent in the current meta.

We just hope they don't overdo it, and we have the reemergence of assassins in the form of Akali, and the Lee Sin Goredrinker build takes center stage once again.
