Riot Games added Malphite to League of Legends on September 2, 2009. as such, he is one of the oldest champions in the game, and the epitome of old, single-class, champions.
In a recent Reddit thread, Riot Reav3 was explaining the intricacies of the upcoming Udyr rework, when one League of Legends fan pointed out that there are other, similar, champions in need of rework.
Their suggestion was a Malphite rework, a champion that was released around the same time as Udyr, and seems to be getting worse and worse as time passes by.
Riot Reav3 responded that Malphite's gameplay is still fun to experience, and his rework will likely be of the ASU, and not the VGA kind.
This means that we can expect Malphite's rework to be purely Visual and Auditory, sith now new abilities, or ability changes happening to his kit. After all, ASU stands for "Art and Sustainability Update".
And, while this doesn't seem as exciting, we have seen what a good ASU can do to an old champion, in the case of Caitlyn and her own visual update during the time of Arcane.
What we can expect of Malphite is for his visual update to incorporate some more of his new, canon, lore into his looks. After all, he is now a shard of a living fortress, and not just a mountain that came to life, as was his lore during his release.
