Today, Bioware and EA revealed 15 minutes of gameplay from Dragon Age: The Veilguard, formerly known as Dragon Age: Vanguard. The gameplay showcased what appears to be one of the linear early game missions in which a player character Rook and his squad fight off the invasion of the enemy forces.
The combat looks pretty smooth and snappy and does a much better job of showing what the next Dragon Age is than the trailer at the Xbox Showcase, which made the game look more like a hero shooter than a fantasy RPG.
As the squad eventually slays enough demons and gets to the source of this invasion they get to a new biome outside of the city but the level design stays pretty linear which is a bit surprising. Not saying it's bad, only that Bioware could probably show something less scripted.
We also got a confirmation that pause is possible at any point in combat, allowing players to select a special ability and plan their next move. Overall, I'd say that this trailer gives me some hope that the final game will be closer to what we expect from Bioware's best days but I won't start my hype engines until we get more details.
EA and Bioware are expected to start showing more of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in the coming months. Hopefully, we get a proper insight into the game's RPG mechanics as today's trailer didn't really emphasize that.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in Autumn 2024.
