CD Projekt RED has confirmed that The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release, while the studio prepares to showcase The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past at Gamescom 2026.

CD Projekt RED CEO Michał Nowakowski revealed that news in a video discussing the future of the series. He stated that over 500 developers are working on the game, and fans can expect Ciri to take centre stage in the upcoming saga.

CD Projekt RED is describing the new entry as its largest and most ambitious game ever.

While this confirms that players have something to look forward to in the future, CD Projekt RED won’t be going into specifics just yet. The Witcher 4 may be years away from release, as it won’t make an appearance at Gamescom 2026. There won’t be a new trailer or gameplay presentation during the show.

The Witcher 4 is aiming for a 2028 release

CD Projekt RED just moved The Witcher 4’s window to 2028. Previously, the company said it wouldn’t be arriving any time before 2027, but hadn’t said anything about 2028. Now players have an official release year to target.

Again, the game will star Ciri as the protagonist and kickstart a new trilogy. As per CD Projekt RED’s official description, players will jump into a brutal dark-fantasy world-driven narrative with single-player open-world RPG elements, running on Unreal Engine 5.

Developer Nowakowski stated that the team wanted to make something big. With over 500 developers on The Witcher 4, CD Projekt RED plans to craft a massive open world, focus on action-gameplay, and deliver a story to match the ambitious new trilogy.

CD Projekt RED won’t have The Witcher 4 at Gamescom 2026

The Witcher 4 may have been teased, but it still won’t appear at Gamescom 2026. CD Projekt RED will instead focus on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, an upcoming expansion set for 2027.

Songs of the Past will be highlighted at Gamescom Opening Night Live and at CD Projekt RED’s booth. Fans can look forward to a few REDstreams from the studio throughout Gamescom. Nowakowski did say there could be a few surprises at the show as well, but it likely won’t include any new info on The Witcher 4.

Don’t worry too much, though. It’s likely we will see a new gameplay demo or trailer for CD Projekt RED’s next big project before the year is out. For now, that game’s official page only has the cinematic trailer and the Unreal Engine 5 technology presentation.
