Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel revealed exciting new details about Avowed's combat, world and features in the latest episode of the Xbox Podcast.

Obsidian's upcoming action RPG Avowed is shaping up quite nicely over the last several months. Following the January deep dive, the developer decided it was time for another proper look at the game at the Xbox Games Showcase and the Xbox podcast, where Game Director Carrie Patel revealed a bunch of new details and footage from Avowed.

We got to see skill trees, new quests, NPCs, companions, and various spells in action but the thing that caught my eye is the combat, which has seen several improvements over the January build.

MORE AVOWED:

The animations look smoother, the enemies react much better to being hit and that stiffness that many fans complained about is completely gone so kudos to Obsidian for working hard on improving this important segment of the game.

In addition, the team also confirmed that Avowed will launch with an optional third-person perspective mode, which will surely be massive news to many RPG fans. This caught me by surprise since it's a big feature that is expected to be confirmed much sooner but Obsidian probably have their reasons for keeping it under wraps for so long.

Another thing that we got to see in the new footage is a new region called Emerald's Dare (I hope I caught that one right) which looks quite big and stunning, especially during the night when the glowing mushrooms make the environments look really punchy.

Avowed will have a dynamic weather and day and night system so you can expect all kinds of different skyboxes and patterns that will certainly result in gorgeous vistas.

The deep dive also gave us a first proper look at the skill trees and attributes as well as weapon upgrading. It's pretty standard RPG stuff from what I could spot, similar to The Outer Worlds. Players will be able to mix and match various skills so if something like a stealth archer or a heavy mage is your thing, you can do that.

In terms of visuals, the game looks pretty but there are some things to iron out like pop-in in the distance or facial animations which are still underwhelming.

Fortunately, the game is content complete and has entered the polish phase so there's a good chance that Obsidian iron out even these minor nitpicks until launch.

Avowed does not have an official release date just yet. The game is expected to launch in late 2024, possibly in November or December.

Obsidian did accidentally reveal November 12, 2024, as the release date but it remains to be seen if that was just a human mistake or the legit launch day.

Confirmed platforms include PC and Xbox Series X|S. Game Pass subscribers will get to play Avowed on day one on console and PC.
