Obsidian Entertainment are working on their next big RPG called Avowed, which they finally revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase just over a week ago. And while many Xbox fans were happy to finally see some in-game footage, some were quite surprised with the game's art style and visuals, which looked nothing like the original teaser from 2020.
In case you don't quite remember the announcement trailer, it was quite dark with a realistic art style, unlike the new in-game footage which looks more colourful and has a light cartoonish look, similar to The Outer Worlds.
Additionally, some Xbox fans were disappointed by the overall graphical fidelity, which didn't quite make Avowed look like a true next-gen game. However, according to an RPGCodex forum user (via Klobrille)who claims to be a developer at Obsidian, Avowed is yet to enter the visual polish phase, which is the point when the developers work on improving the game's art style and visual fidelity.
"[Avowed] isn't Alpha yet, art will get refined in various ways. Lighting will change," the Obsidian developer wrote on the forum. "[Avowed will have] the longest we'll have for Alpha/Beta period for any game at Obsidian by a longshot, and that is good news."
Furthermore, the person shared a couple of new details about the game's scope, saying that Avowed is big and open and that it's unfair to compare it to The Outer Worlds in terms of size.
"The game is big and open, it is unfair to compare it to The Outer Worlds (I think Feargus [Obsidian Entertainment CEO] is trying to keep expectations down just in case), which I think is nothing alike," they wrote.
The developer concluded their Avowed info dump by saying that the screenshots that Obsidian released are random shots from the game and don't include areas that are not so bright, happy and visually indistinct.
Since none of this is official information, we suggest you take these details with a pinch of salt, just like any other rumour. We have to say that it's somewhat obvious that Avowed's visuals will probably improve by the time the game launches in 2024 as developers optimise the game and use every bit of power from the Xbox Series X console.
We expect to see more of Avowed sometime in 2024 at a new Xbox Developer Direct, which focuses on in-depth reveals of upcoming Xbox exclusives.
