The official reveal of Obsidian Entertainment's next big RPG Avowed caught many people off guard given that this Xbox exclusive didn't look as dark and gritty as the official teaser trailer from 2020. Obsidian clarified that the game changed a lot during the development and in the latest interview, they stated that Avowed wasn't even a single-player RPG at one point.
In the most recent episode of Obsidian 20th Anniversary Documentary, the studio boss Feargus Urquhart revealed that Avowed had a strong co-op focus early in development but that obviously changed to make the game more akin to a traditional Obsidian singleplayer RPG.
As the team worked on the game, they locked on the idea that Avowed should be Obsidian's version of what a fantasy first-person RPG is and should be.
Avowed storytelling and RPG features
Feargus also revealed that the team had to find a perfect balance between taking things from the iconic Pillars of Eternity series and yet creating a new game that also aims for a larger audience.
He said that the team is doing their best to deliver bespoke content, deep systems and incredible storytelling that's focused on characters, societies and factions, similar to previous Obsidian titles like The Outer Worlds, for example.
Last but not least, Obsidian feel that Avowed is a natural extension of all the things they care about in video games. "Avowed is the natural extension of all the things we care about as a studio, of all the things we are great at," they said.
So all in all, that's a lot of positive and encouraging insight on Avowed, which is shaping up to be Xbox's big RPG for 2024, just when all the Starfield hype starts to slow down.
Avowed is coming sometime in 2024 to PC and Xbox Series X|S. The game is also launching day one on Xbox Game Pass.
