Obsidian Entertainment finally gave us a first glimpse at their big new RPG called Avowed at the recent Xbox Games Showcase and followed up with a bunch of new details at the Extended showcase yesterday.
Game Director Carrie Patel revealed that the scope of Avowed is similar in size to Obsidian's previous RPG The Outer Worlds and not Skyrim as some players might have expected. Additionally, Avowed will not be truly an open-world game like Fallout 4 or, again, Skyrim. Instead, Avowed's world is a series of interconnected open zones.
"It's going to be roughly comparable to KOTOR 2 or The Outer Worlds. It is set up as a series of interconnected open zones that players can explore," Patel said.
This was Obsidian's design choice to keep the narrative more focused, which is one of the studio's strengths. You can also expect Obsidian-style quests and companions, which seem to play a major part in Avowed.

Avowed: Story, gameplay, trailers, release date, platforms and everything we know so far
To some, the actual size of the game may come as a disappointment, especially now that Obsidian are part of Xbox Game Studios and have the resources and support they need to make much bigger games. However, you have to keep in mind Obsidian have roughly 100 people working on Avowed, which isn't much and certainly nowhere near enough to create something as grand as Skyrim.
Also, we still haven't seen enough of Avowed's world, which could be much more packed than The Outer Worlds, with more quests, characters, dungeons and random encounters. Therefore, we'd suggest you don't jump to any conclusions just yet.
So all in all, we are eager to see more of Avowed, which certainly looks intriguing, especially if you're a fan of Obsidian's writing and quest design.
Avowed is currently targeting a 2024 release date. The game is coming to PC and Xbox Series X|S and will be available day one with Xbox Game Pass.
