South of Midnight is a brand new Xbox exclusive from We Happy Few studio Compulsion Games and here are some of the key details that you need to know about this fantasy world.

Xbox Games Showcase 2023 had plenty of mind-blowing reveals, especially from Xbox Game Studios, who announced several new titles, including South of Midnight from Compulsion Games

The South of Midnight trailer didn't give away a ton of details but it introduced us to its dark world, female protagonist and the overall concept of the game.

So, what is South of Midnight? Well, according to Compulsion Games, it's a third-person action-adventure built in Unreal Engine 5. The game is set in the American South it follows a young black woman called Hazel, who has special powers and uses them to fight supernatural monsters from South folklore.

The game is set in a version of the modern world but players will travel almost exclusively through rural areas so expect a lot of dense forests, swamps and stunning nature.

According to the creative director David Sears, in South of Midnight, Hazel is set off on a quest to repair a broken world by fighting magical beasts which are all based on real-life folklore from the region the game takes its inspirations from.

You probably noticed the weird, kitting-like magic that Hazel uses at the end of the trailer. This will be a key component of the game, used both for combat and traversal according to the devs.

“It’s full of fractal geometry expressed as knitting and doilies – everything is themed after textiles,” explains Sears. “Essentially, you take the strands that make up the universe and weave or spin them into useful forms for the player to use."

The blog post on the official Xbox website has plenty of more insight into South of Midnight and we wholeheartedly recommend you check it out if the game looks like your cup of tea.

South of Midnight still does not have a release date but we expect it on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
