The bounty system in Starfield, the colossal RPG by Bethesda, is a mechanic known for its uncompromising nature.
If, by any chance, you find yourself caught in the act of committing a misdemeanour, such as pickpocketing, theft, or engaging in other criminal activities, you'll be faced with the choice of paying a bounty to regain your freedom or potentially going down the road of a criminal, which can have dire consequences for your character.
If you ever find yourself ensnared in a situation where you've committed a crime, fear not, as there is a solution. Although it may seem a bit confusing, this guide will provide a clear explanation of how to reset things to square one.
How to clear off a bounty and prevent your character of going down the criminal road
Not every criminal act is intentional; at times, due to ignorance, you may unwittingly commit an action that results in a bounty being placed on your head without your awareness of the mistake. A similar scenario unfolded for me when, during a mission, I was ambushed by pirates, inadvertently destroying two Freestar Collective ships in the process, thus incurring their bounty.
Upon my arrival on a planet under the jurisdiction of the Freestar Collective, NPCs initiated hostile actions against me. While it is an option to engage in combat and eliminate them, doing so will undoubtedly have detrimental consequences for your character.
Naturally, one of the least troublesome solutions is to revert to a previous saved game state before the incident occurred. However, if you prefer not to take this route, an alternative solution exists. Fast travel to New Atlantis, and immediately upon arriving at the fast travel point, ascend the stairs and make a left into the hotel. Inside, to the left, you'll spot two kiosks; the second one is designated for settling your bounty.
Each major city or settlement has a bounty kiosk, with the one in New Atlantis being the most accessible and straightforward to locate, given its presence in one of the game's initial in-game areas. The only limitation is that you cannot settle the bounty at the location where the crime was committed.
Our recommendation is to promptly address the bounty situation, as choosing to remain wanted will result in continual faction attacks against you, leading to further accumulation of your bounty.
