CD Projekt Red has confirmed that The Witcher 3's new expansion, Songs of the Past, is heading to Gamescom this August despite its delay to 2027, giving fans their first proper look at the game in a controlled setting.

Songs of the Past, the surprise third expansion to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was announced at the end of May but remains light on detail. CD Projekt Red has now confirmed that it will have a presence at Gamescom 2026 in August, offering the first extended look at the expansion since it was leaked early through the studio's own RED Launcher and rushed into a public announcement ahead of schedule.

However, anyone hoping to get their hands on it at the show will be out of luck. CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed that there will not be a playable demo on the show floor. Instead, the studio will present the game in guided form, in the manner it typically uses for major Witcher reveals, with journalists and attendees watching a curated walkthrough rather than taking control themselves. Nowakowski pointed to how the studio handled previous Witcher showings as a reference point for what to expect.

The expansion was originally intended to release this year, which CD Projekt Red has since confirmed, but was pushed to 2027. Nowakowski described the delay as the "best possible result" for the project, suggesting the studio opted for quality over speed once it became clear the original timeline was not achievable.

Songs of the Past is being co-developed with Fool's Theory, the studio behind the incoming The Witcher 1 remake and made up of veterans from the original Witcher 3 team. In terms of scope, CD Projekt Red has drawn comparisons to Blood and Wine, the second expansion widely regarded as one of the finest pieces of RPG content ever released.

After Blood and Wine, Songs of the Past will be the final stretch of Geralt's story.

The expansion launches in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It returns players to the role of Geralt of Rivia in a brand-new adventure, and early key art suggests the action will take Geralt into territory closer to Velen. With The Witcher 4 also in full production and starring Ciri, Songs of the Past increasingly looks like a farewell to Geralt before the franchise moves on.
