Prime Video's God Of War adaptation is replacing its lead actor. Ryan Hurst, who had been cast as Kratos and even released a first official look at the character back in February, will not continue in the role after suffering a serious injury during filming in late June. Hurst tore his bicep while performing a stunt on the Vancouver set, an injury that required surgery and carries a recovery timeline of four to six months for basic function and potentially up to a year before the kind of full strength the physically demanding role requires.
Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios reportedly held out hope that Hurst could return to the set by mid-August, but that window proved too optimistic. Production has been on hiatus since the injury occurred, and with prep for resumption expected to begin in mid-August ahead of a mid-October restart, the studios concluded the timeline simply did not work. According to Deadline, which first broke the story, the decision to recast was made after careful consideration by both studios. Hurst had committed significantly to the role, putting on 40 pounds of muscle and working for months before the accident.
The situation is particularly unfortunate given how far along production was. Four episodes had reportedly already been filmed before the injury halted everything, meaning those will now need to be reshot with a new actor in the role. No replacement has been announced yet.
Whether child actor Callum Vinson, who plays Atreus, will also need to be recast given the time that has elapsed is also reportedly still being determined. The rest of the confirmed cast remains in place, including Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Alastair Duncan returning as Mimir. The series is created by Ronald D. Moore and airs on Prime Video, with a release date yet to be confirmed.
