A new God of War game could be announced as soon as September. Christopher Judge, who voices Kratos in Santa Monica Studio's Norse saga, dropped substantial hints at a recent fan event that were captured on video.
When asked about future God of War projects, Judge revealed TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos from the Greek era games, will return to play the character in upcoming remakes. More significantly, Judge stated these remakes will feature a new combat system, suggesting more than simple visual upgrades.
New God of War game announcement
Judge then added fuel to speculation about the next mainline entry. "Then you'll see what we're doing probably in late summer," he said, strongly hinting at an announcement window coinciding with September's typical State of Play timing.
The new God of War game has been rumoured to explore Egyptian mythology for some time, representing Kratos' third major pantheon after Greek and Norse settings. However, recent reports from Tom Henderson complicate that narrative, suggesting Santa Monica Studio may be planning a return to Greece alongside or instead of Egypt. Whether this means dual settings in one game or separate projects remains unclear.
“There’s a lot of speculation out there that it’s going to be an Egyptian God of War game… but I’ve got a feeling that it’s going to go back to Greek mythology, to be honest. And now I’m wondering, is that why they are doing the remake of the original trilogy?,” Henderson said recently.
The remakes represent an interesting proposition. Bringing TC Carson back for the original trilogy with modernised combat could satisfy fans who prefer the Greek era's faster-paced action, whilst introducing newer players to Kratos' origin story. The Greek games sold exceptionally well, but played dramatically differently from the 2018 soft reboot's over-the-shoulder style.
If Judge's "late summer" timeline holds, expect a September State of Play to feature either the new mainline God of War, the remakes, or potentially both. Santa Monica Studio hasn't commented officially.
