Santa Monica Studio, best known for the critically acclaimed God of War series, has long been rumoured to be working on a brand-new IP. While fans have speculated wildly about what this new project could be, with some even hoping for a full-blown sci-fi adventure like The Mandalorian, it looks like those dreams can officially be put to rest.
In a recent forum post, trusted journalist Jason Schreier addressed the ongoing chatter, clarifying that the new game is not a sci-fi project. Schreier stated, "And that the sci-fi stuff (that people have apparently believed for years now?) is nonsense."
He also noted that the upcoming title isn’t technically a new IP in the strictest sense but might feel like one to some players when they finally see the game. "I'll put it this way: it's not a new IP, but it might feel like one. Maybe that's why people are confused."
This subtle clarification has only added more fuel to the mystery surrounding what exactly Santa Monica Studio is cooking up.
Schreier's comment came as a response to confusion among fans who’ve been piecing together bits of unofficial information over the years. While he didn’t share specific details about the setting or genre, his word effectively debunks any long-standing rumours suggesting a leap into space or futuristic sci-fi territory.
Santa Monica Studio has been relatively quiet since the release of God of War Ragnarök in 2022, and speculation about their next project has been constant ever since. With the studio's reputation for pushing narrative and gameplay boundaries, expectations are sky-high, regardless of what kind of games the studio is working on.
For now, it seems we’ll have to keep waiting for an official reveal. But if Schreier's track record is anything to go by, fans can at least cross sci-fi off their prediction lists.
