Sony reportedly wanted to lock down upcoming action RPG Crimson Desert to be a timed exclusive

It looks like Pearl Abyss' long-awaited action-adventure Crimson Desert will release across all platforms as Korean publisher want to maximise their profits.

Korean developer and publisher Pearl Abyss have reportedly refused Sony's timed exclusivity deal for the highly anticipated action adventure RPG Crimson Desert

Pearl Abyss revealed this information during the investor relations conference back in September 2024 and some of the details are only surfacing now thanks to a financial blogger who attended the event (via ResetEra).

According to the information provided by the blogger, Pearl Abyss revealed that Sony's deal would prohibit them from releasing the game on Xbox consoles for a certain period of time. Luckily for Xbox gamers, Pearl Abyss said no to such an offer and decided to self-publish the game to maximise their profits.

Rumours about Crimson Desert being a PlayStation 5 exclusive have circulated online over the last year or so with some insiders claiming that the game won't be on Xbox at launch. Pearl Abyss themselves unintentionally fueled these rumours by stating that they are in discussions with partners over potential publishing deals which many took as a confirmation that Sony will probably lock this one away from Microsoft's platforms like they did with numerous other Asian games recently.

Sony compared Crimson Desert to Ghost of Tsushima

Interestingly, the financial blogger noted that Sony praised Crimson Desert, likening its atmosphere and story to their samurai blockbuster Ghost of Tsushima, which sold 10 million copies. It's possible that this was an attempt to sway Pearl Abyss in their decision, but the Korean company ultimately stood firm.

At this moment, we still don't know the exact release platforms for Crimson Desert. Even when Pearl Abyss revealed the recent gameplay just a month ago, they were only stating that the game is coming to "PC and consoles", refusing to mention which consoles specifically.

Crimson Desert's release date could be Spring 2025

Crimson Desert does not have a release date either, so that could be one of the reasons why Pearl Abyss didn't announce specific console platforms, but the blogger who shared all this info is stating that the game is targeting Spring 2025 or Q2 2025, which isn't that far away.

Hopefully, we'll get more info and details on Crimson Desert's release date and platforms soon so all this speculation and rumours can finally go away.

In case you're not familiar with Crimson Desert, this action-adventure RPG is set in a massive open world with various biomes and secrets to uncover.
