The Elder Scrolls VI finally has a name, more than eight years after it was first teased

Bethesda Game Studios have revealed that The Elder Scrolls VI is called Sentinel, as part of their 40th anniversary celebrations. The name points strongly towards Hammerfell as the game’s setting.

After more than eight years of waiting, The Elder Scrolls VI finally has a name. Bethesda Game Studios revealed the full title, The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, at the end of a video celebrating the studio’s 40th anniversary.

Bethesda said they were happy to “finally reveal the name and location”, effectively confirming that the game takes its name from its setting. In Elder Scrolls lore, Sentinel is a major port city in Hammerfell, the desert province home to the Redguards, which fans have long suspected based on the brief 2018 teaser.

It's going to be a while before we see it again...

And while it's certainly great to finally get some news about TES VI, don’t expect a proper look at the game any time soon, though. Bethesda said development is ongoing, but that “it’ll be some time before we’re ready to share more”.

There’s no release date, platforms or gameplay yet. The reveal was a title and logo, nothing more. Surely it's not going to take another eight years, Todd?

Todd Howard looks back at 40 years of Bethesda Game Studios

The name came at the end of a video in which Todd Howard walks through the studio’s original offices in Bethesda, Maryland. He looks back at its early days, from physics-based American football game Gridiron in 1986 to its open-world Terminator games, and recalls knocking on the studio’s door in January 1993 asking for a job.

From there, Howard runs through the studio’s best-known games, including Morrowind, which kicked off its long relationship with Xbox, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Skyrim. He says Skyrim is still the studio’s most played game, 15 years after launch. Howard also shares a nice bit of trivia: when Microsoft told the team the Xbox 360 would have 512MB of RAM instead of 256MB, the studio threw a party, and he’s “never seen programmers happier”.

Howard closed by saying the studio is also looking ahead to the future of Fallout, before revealing the Elder Scrolls VI title.

The Elder Scrolls VI was first teased at E3 2018 with a short title card and a shot of a coastline, and Bethesda have shared very little since. In the meantime, the studio released Fallout 76 and Starfield, while Microsoft acquired Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media in 2021. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the last mainline entry, came out in 2011.
